The big thread this morning is consumption — both the literal kind (someone has to pay for those Copilot tokens, and now Visual Studio Code will show you how much) and the strategic kind (Anthropic dangling its most expensive Claude plan at open-source maintainers, xAI shipping another frontier model into the same week). Underneath all of that, the BRIDGE pieces remind me that Japan’s deep-tech scene still leans on a small cast of people weaving academia and operators together at events like IVS. Same news cycle as always: who’s spending, who’s shipping, who’s connecting.
- Microsoft added a Visual Studio Code feature that surfaces how much GitHub Copilot usage is costing you on the new pay-as-you-go pricing. Copilot moved to usage-based billing back in June 2026, so this is essentially a built-in spend meter for the chat and agent surfaces.
- Anthropic expanded its "Claude for Open Source" program and is now handing eligible maintainers six months of free access to the top Claude Max 20x subscription. In plain English: if you’re shipping OSS, there is a real chance you can run the priciest Claude tier for half a year on Anthropic.
- Elon Musk says Grok 4.5 goes general availability tomorrow and frames it as "Opus-class but faster, more token-efficient, and cheaper." Coverage includes a short direct quote; full benchmarks and pricing are presumably landing with the release.
- Part three of BRIDGE’s IVS series looks at the widening IVS ecosystem — what started as a small invite-only offsite has, since around 2023, sprawled into a broader, slightly chaotic open-door gathering. The piece continues the story on the people behind that shift.
- Part two of the BRIDGE IVS series uses Kyoto as a base to look at how researchers, founders, and generational figures are being stitched together. The author notes that deep-tech reporting is genuinely hard because so many researchers want to narrate their own work. Feed body is truncated.
